This recording attempts to portray de Monte as a master craftsman with a superb all round technique, rather than as an innovator. The mass is from de Monte's Liber primus missarum (Antwerp, 1587) and based on his motet with the same title (not recorded). Two of the motets are for double choir, in the case of Hodie dilectissimi some genuine 8 part writing is included. The motets are taken from publications published in 1579, 1583 and 1587. Texts are taken from both the Old and New Testaments (except for track 14) and a range of techniques is employed to represent them in music. The choir is rather recessed and individual lines are not always as sharp as they might be.
