Jacobus Arcadelt (c.1505-1568) was one of the many Northern composers who came permanently to Italy in this period. He worked primarily in Rome, and his fame drew such historical figures as Michelangelo. The present program consists of his Primo Libro de Madrigali (1538/39), making for a fine introduction. Poets include Petrarch, Michelangelo, and Lorenzo de Medici. As noted above, the recording opens with a motet.
