This recording features music of Giovanni Battista Vitali (1632-1692) and Giuseppe Colombi (1635-1694). Colombi is relatively more obscure, spending his entire career in Modena. However, he was apparently quite talented, reaching the post of "chief of the instrumentalists" in Modena by age 24. Vitali, a student of Cazzati, produced an output which is much more widely known. Vitali particularly excelled at variation forms. The present program is taken primarily from Vitali's manuscript source Partite per il Violone. With the works by Colombi taken from a variety of sources, this music is the earliest surviving for the bass of the violin family (or cello) in a solo role.

A similar program devoted to the solo cello:

Sonates à 1, 2, e 3 Violoncelli e basso
Basevi / Martini / Cerri / Martino
Ensemble Concerto
Tactus 680001
