The following is an archival copy of the information & charter which accompanied the creation of the newsgroup rec.music.early.

rec.music.early is an unmoderated newsgroup which passed its vote for
creation by 280:35 as reported in news.announce.newgroups on 18 July 1991.

The charter, culled from the call for votes:

        To provide a forum for exchange of news and
        views about

        i)  medieval, renaissance and baroque music
            (sacred and secular - both `art' and `folk')
            derived as part of European culture, its
            researchers, performers, instruments,
            instrument-makers, festivals, concerts and
            societies;

        ii) authenticity in music of (these and) later periods,
            e.g. classical and romantic.

Note that, officially speaking, the newsgroup's charter has not been changed since it was proposed in 1991. Newsgroups do not change charters after being created. However, in more recent times, most newsgroups have more elaborate charters.
