Jacopo da Bologna

Jacopo da Bologna: Madrigalli e Cacce
La Reverdie
Arcana 327

The material by Jacopo presents a nice range of styles within the early Ars Nova style, and also has the benefit of broadening the repertory range away from Florence. I have always enjoyed Aquila Altera in particular.

The performance shows good technique and provides welcome variety in interpretive style to the list. Although there are some issues with excessive instrumental doubling of voices on high-pitched instruments and some overly-dramatic pauses, it provides a very convincing glimpse of Jacopo's music.

The overall result ends up being a stimulating program, with a rather technical sense of Ars Nova secular polyphony that provides something of a glimpse into the variety which undoubtedly existed in the era.

To medieval secular list
