This is quite an impressive production devoted to what had been one of Ockeghem's more sphynx-like works. Here, the Missa Cuiusvis toni is really made to come alive, illustrating its fascinating counterpoint and flexibility in the different modes. This music suddenly seems much more interesting, which is about the best one can say for an interpretation.
The performance is outstanding, as is the scholarship behind the choice of musica ficta, etc. This ensemble's earlier experience with Machaut & Dufay, and medieval music generally, obviously serves it well in approaching the later techniques of Ockeghem. Clarity of line is excellent, rhythmic energy is excellent, etc. In short, the whole production comes off as compelling and making sense, instantly one of the most illustrative & enjoyable Ockeghem recordings made.
This recording was named my EM Record of the Year for 2007.
