Du Caurroy's fantasias are the premier summation of French instrumental counterpoint from the Renaissance, and fine music. There is a wealth of ideas here, expressed in elegant fashion.
The performance is also excellent, and a definite classic. It does have draw-backs, as it is too short (his complete output is 42), and could feature viol performances to greater effect. Nonetheless the articulation is superb & expressive, and the pacing good if a bit too stately.
