Josquin: Missa Ave maris stella

Josquin: Missa Ave maris stella / Motets à la Vierge
A Sei Voci - Bernard Fabre-Garrus
Astrée 8507

This is one of the more interesting Josquin programs around, highlighting his more old-fashioned compositions. Some of the early works presented here show just how accomplished Josquin was in the style of the late fifteenth century before embarking on his own path.

The performance made a fine impact when it appeared, especially given its precision for a relatively large ensemble, but it is starting to feel a bit dated and even strident. The interpretation remains worthwhile nonetheless, and the Missa Ave maris stella is certainly one of Josquin's most appealing masses.
