A more recent French Ars Nova program by Gothic Voices is very welcome. This is some repertory where they pioneered new performance styles, and here that style is fully polished. In addition, this program is an opportunity to hear all of Solage's chansons in one place.
The singing is crisp & pure, providing a nice clarity that contrasts with the more dreamy instrumentally-oriented renditions by some other groups (which I also enjoy). Altogether this is a fine rebirth by Gothic Voices.
Whereas the strength of this program is in gathering all of the known Solage songs in one place, in some ways it is also the weakness. There is some interesting material here, but the Machaut tracks do provide a breath of fresh air at times.
