Agricola: Chansons

Agricola: Chansons

Agricola wrote many interesting chansons, some of the best of the era. In many ways, he is a more stimulating chanson composer than Josquin, and offers more genuine continuity with the styles of the previous generation.

The present selection is somewhat limited, being dominated by instrumental items and then splitting the vocal tracks between the more and less serious compositions. Each of these is interesting in its own right, but obviously I prefer the serious style. The instrumental variations on "De tous bien playne" must also be noted for their significance.

The performance is rather good in its instrumental work and its general approach to blend and phrasing. The vocal work is generally pleasant, although there does seem to be some lack of sensitivity at times, and the entire production is rather distant. Nonetheless, the performance is certainly quite acceptable and worthwhile.
