Obrecht: Missa De Sancto Donatiano / Missa Sicut spina rosam

Obrecht: Missa De Sancto Donatiano / Missa Sicut spina rosam
A:N:S Chorus - János Bali
Hungaroton 32192

These masses present fewer of the characteristic features of Obrecht's cycles, especially not the most abstract manipulations of this ensemble's previous recording. Instead, they frequently evoke Ockeghem, with the second argued to be a tribute mass on the master's death.

While the style of the first mass, especially, can be disjointed at times, this remains intriguing music. It also illustrates Obrecht's variety of style, breaking as it does from the type of music usually recorded. The latter mass shows more admirable flow & overall form, and may end up being one of Obrecht's more compelling settings.

The interpretation continues to be of the first rank, with multiple texts used along with the cantus firmus sections. Energy is high, and the projection of Obrecht's style & architectural vision remains unparalleled.
