This program provides the opportunity to hear the work of a major composer of polyphony from the post-Josquin generation working in an extended, purely instrumental idiom. That this should be interesting on its own goes without saying, and indeed the music presents various points of interest. It is perhaps more one-dimensional than later instrumental music, but present a wealth of contrapuntal ideas.
The performance is technically accomplished, with a good sense of pacing & sonority. There is also a nice variety of instrumentation.
One negative is that the program is relatively short, yet leaves most of the variations unrecorded.
