The performance is typical of Gothic Voices: wonderful vocal tone, rather stiff phrasing. While the approach can be refreshing, some subtleties are missed. Nonetheless, this disc continues to be a valuable reference and enjoyable presentation.
The program is an excellent one, and the clear distinction made between different genres of songs is a much-needed touch. The lighter, more rhythmically angular songs are handled quite well. The weightier pieces could use more attention.
The all-vocal rendition of many of these songs is welcome, although it does place a greater emphasis on articulation & diction. The use of vocal ornaments, while rather subtle, also serves to give this release a sense of distinction.
