Ciconia: Motets, Virelais, Ballate, Madrigals

Ciconia: Motets, Virelais, Ballate, Madrigals
Alla Francesca and Alta
Opus 111 30-101

Ciconia is certainly one of the more interesting composers of the period, and so deserving of the attention which he receives. Nonetheless, it does leave several comparable composers relatively under-represented. This is a very fine program, highlighting some of my favorite works by Ciconia, and showing a good diversity overall. It easily remains the best one-disc introduction.

The performance is excellent, although not quite as clear in approach and especially articulation as this ensemble can be in some repertory. Nonetheless, they manage an integrity of conception which presents a good variety within the more usual approach to rendering Ciconia. Instrumental performance is common, and although it would be nice to hear more lyrics, the instrumental works are so well-executed that it is difficult to complain. Alternation in disposition on lines works to particularly good effect in some of these items.

Although this interpretation is still quite good, it does lack some of the confidence and sweep of this group's later programs centered on this era.

To medieval secular list
