This is a fine program of superlative music. Byrd's consort music, like his keyboard music, is exceptional. In this case, his scope & output are much smaller, but there are still several pieces which are among the best of the era.
The performance is fairly good. When it first appeared, it was the best of its kind, but there have been many improvements in the past ten years. Now the present performance seems to lack energy & polish. However, it is still serviceable, and although there are better tracks here & there, there is not another comparable program.
Although performance technique has improved in the interim, notably by Fretwork itself, this is still a valuable disc.
