This recording continues Alessandrini's series of keyboard music, again taking in a very broad range, from such pioneers as Gabrieli & Merulo to such end-of-an-era writers as Picchi & Strozzi.

The Gabrielis really open the era of what we now think of as cathedral organ sonority. A dedicated recording:

Andrea & Giovanni Gabrieli: Musiche per organo
Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini / Liuwe Tamminga
Tactus 510001

And a recording devoted to Merulo, one of the first to write organ masses:

Merulo: Missa in dominicis diebus / Toccata / Magnificat
Frédéric Muñoz / Grupo Vocal Gregor - Dante Andreo
Naxos 8.553334

And a recording devoted to organ music of the earlier part of this era in the ricercar genre:

Ricercari
The Art of the 16th Century Ricercar in Italy
Liuwe Tamminga
Accent 97127

Another Italian organ collection, focusing on the Southern school:

The Heritage of Frescobaldi
Andrea Marcon
Divox Antiqua 79405

Finally, a more general collection which moves into Southern German music:

Renaissance & Baroque Organ
Herbert Tachezi
Teldec (Das Alte Werk) 77606 (3 CDs)
