Here the Tallis Scholars cycle turns back to two of Josquin's better-known masses. The Missa De beata virgine was, of course, his mostly widely copied in its day, despite its relative lack of cyclical unity. The Missa Ave maris stella has received some good recorded performances in the past, and is a very polished & inventive setting. Indeed, the Missa Ave maris stella has been something of a personal favorite in Josquin's mass oeuvre.
The Tallis Scholars continue their first-rate mass cycle with this issue, and the performances are again outstanding. Although this music seems almost too famous at this point, it's still worthwhile and easy to include here.
