This recording includes the complete first part of the Broken Consort, in which each suite is made up of a Fantasy, Corant, Air, Saraband sequence. This set, composed in 1661, is one of Locke's most polished and successful. Scoring is for two violin, bass viol & continuo (with written-out theorbo parts surviving in some sources). Stylistically, the most similar music is that of Jenkins or maybe Lawes.
