This program is based upon one of Monteverdi's most important and varied publications, the Selva Morale e Spirituale of 1641, which includes forty sacred settings. Although less known than the Vespers, this massive publication contains perhaps Monteverdi's most significant sacred polyphonic writing. The present program also utilizes motets from other publications in which Monteverdi appears in anthology to replace the antiphons which would have been a part of the performance of works from Selva.
