Souterliedekens is a setting of psalm texts in Dutch to popular tunes, printed in 1540 and thought to have been initially undertaken by the Utrecht nobleman, Willem van Zuylen van Nijevelt. These are the settings of the various Songbooks above.

The settings by Jacobus Clemens non Papa (c.1510-c.1556) are 3-part adaptations of these works with melody usually in the tenor. These were published by Tielman Susato together with the more famous dance tunes in 1556-57. A second volume was published in 1561, with adaptations by Clemens' pupil Gherardus Mes. These are 4-part settings, aimed partly at instrumentalists and with the melody usually in the top line.
