Jacob Obrecht (1457/8-1505) - A discography

This discography has now been broken down by individual work, and researched to a pretty good degree, both for all the material we have detailed here and in our usual sources, and for some sources farther afield. Although a large amount of work has gone into this effort, it is certainly possibile that some recordings remain missing. A disturbing percentage do remain without clear details. Please advise me on this, if you have further information. Even as things stand, this listing should prove useful.

Biography

Jacob Obrecht (1457/8-1505) was one of the primary composers responsible for significant changes in musical style during the late fifteenth century. He was especially important to the development of larger forms, as the first composer to systematically demonstrate unified formal structure and long-range cadential planning over the course of extended works. Obrecht's approach to unity and development went beyond the simple employment of a cantus firmus or unifying gesture. He consequently personifies today's mass-as-symphony ideal most decisively. Obrecht's innovations also touched the realm of sonority, where he reaffirmed the prominence of reduced scoring passages, and pioneered a lighter sound-world in which changes in the number of active voices served to continue a broader musical argument without being ends in themselves. Recent revisions to the biographies and chronologies of Obrecht & Josquin indicate that some developments previously credited to Josquin were actually Obrecht's doing. A vision of Obrecht now emerges in which he was a precocious talent, the first of his generation to perfect the mature style of the era, and a composer who redefined mass composition in the 1480s. His work was followed only later by Josquin's own refinements.

Although Obrecht's accomplishments and apparent musical intellect can stand next to any in Western music, his career outline is not one of consistent success. He seems to have been irresponsible, and to have had relatively little regard for other professional demands placed upon him. Indeed, one might draw a parallel with Busnoys, whom Obrecht likely knew since childhood at the Burgundian court. Obrecht was born in Ghent, the son of a Burgundian court trumpeter, Willem Obrecht. He seems to have had at least a modest university education, something available to the son of a securely employed tradesman, and was trained for the priesthood. He may have had early instruction as a court musician. However, Obrecht's resume soon shows the traits of a devoted composer, perhaps with few performance duties attached (something which can be said of Isaac). It has been suggested that he was never a singer at all.

Obrecht was choir director at Bergen op Zoom from 1480 to 1484, and was already writing mass cycles. During these years, he was the only composer of his generation to be mentioned by Tinctoris as among the most eminent of the century (Dunstaple, Dufay, Ockeghem, and Busnoys were those mentioned alongside him), and had his works received prominently at the court in Ferrara. In 1484, he became master of the choirboys at Cambrai, where he ran into trouble for dereliction of duty and embezzlement. He took a post at Bruges in 1485, and went on an extended trip to Italy in 1487/8. He was dismissed from Bruges by 1491, and took a post in Antwerp by 1492. He was employed again in Bergen op Zoom in 1497, back to Bruges in 1498, and back to Antwerp in 1501. He eventually succeeded Josquin at Ferrara in 1504, and died there of the plague less than a year later. Obrecht's age was stated to be 38 in a portrait of 1496, a credibly specific number, and so his date of birth can be ascertained with some certainty.

Obrecht wrote at least thirty mass cycles, of which two mentioned in contemporary sources are lost and one is missing two of its parts. Four other cycles have been attributed to him. Among these thirty-four, three are in three parts, while the remainder are in four parts, except for the Missa Sub tuum presidium (which progresses from three to seven parts). Unusually, Obrecht left no isolated Credos or other mass movements. He wrote approximately thirty motets and related sacred forms, in a variety of dispositions for from two to six voices. Obrecht's work in the motet genre is his most varied, from simpler alternating settings to more abstract multi-texted pieces, many seemingly intended to serve differing purposes. While his stylistic breakthrough in the 1480s centered on the mass cycle, the motet became the subject of more intensive development toward the end of his life, with such works as Laudemus nunc Dominum (a 5) & Quis numerare queat (a 4). Also notable is the motet upon the death of his father (1488), Mille quingentis (a 4), which makes use of the Requiem chant. Obrecht left more than thirty secular songs, although some are only weakly attributed, or likely arrangements. The courtly song genre seems to have held little appeal for him, as the songs overwhelmingly survive without text, and most with light-hearted or folksy titles. Many, and perhaps most, seem to be explicitly instrumental and are of modest length.

Despite his administrative failings, Obrecht's secular pieces point to a composer concerned first with jubilation and popular celebration. Indeed, this image comes through clearly in the rhythmically animated style of his masses as well. Obrecht can be perceived as a happy - even carefree - man in his music, and it is this sense of living for the moment which must color any view of his lapses of responsibility, rather than stereotypical thoughts of the intransigent artist. In fact, Obrecht is said to have written a mass cycle in a single night. His masses are certainly his most impressive creations today, and it is his ability to animate short phrases into lengthier sections and ultimately into large-scale forms which is nearly unmatched. Obrecht's rigorous use of cantus firmus layout may be his most immediately observable trait, but it is his music's seamless progression from small- to large-scale elements & arguments, with seeming indifference to what appear on paper to be oppressive formal constraints, which is its most compelling quality. His music is obviously made for direct appreciation, formality aside.

Obrecht's sense of formal layout is first attributable in transparent fashion to his acquaintance with Busnoys (expressed in what must be his earliest mass, Missa Petrus apostolus), and then to a more expansive predilection traceable to straightforward stylistic imitation of Ockeghem (in such works as Missa De Sancto Donatiano & Missa Sicut spina rosam). However, Obrecht soon increased the scope and clarity of these models, adopting a series of cantus firmus designs aimed at extending the limits of rational organization. In his mature masses, Obrecht achieved a heightened sense of musical purpose which was to infuse Josquin's later efforts. In masses such as Missa Fortuna desperata & Missa Malheur me bat, artistic intention and formal design are observable to a new extent. Not only does this music exhibit a remarkable sense of control and attention to detailed relationships across larger spans, but it does so with an incredible melodic vigor. It is this exuberance and ability to span time which is Obrecht's trademark, pushing specific cantus firmus manipulations into the background. Later masses such as Missa Si dedero, in which he embarked upon an embryonic parody technique, and Missa Maria zart, in which he seems to have embarked upon a program to extend his "spans" to near-infinite duration, serve to develop aspects of this mature style.

Despite his formal innovations, Obrecht's near indifference to text in many of his most impressive musical passages marks his mindset as more medieval than that of subsequent generations. This is one reason his music was less aggressively copied in the sixteenth century, and today he almost seems to have been a composer who would have been happiest writing symphonies in the instrumental idioms of later centuries. Obrecht's premature death robbed Europe of one of its great musical intellects, and one can only speculate on the ideas he would have explored in the 1500s. It is this premature death which partly set the stage for the slower-working and more conscientious Josquin to assume his eventual place as the leading representative of the golden age of polyphony.

Obrecht's Works

The works list is based on the Obrecht article in the New Grove, 2nd edition, by Rob Wegman. It is supplemented with some material from Wegman's Born for the Muses: The Life and Masses of Jacob Obrecht, Oxford 1993.

Reference is given to the piece's volume and page number in the New Obrecht Edition (1983-99), edited by Chris Maas and others, whenever possible (all but a handful of (mis)attributions). An ordering is given, derived from Wegman's book, with Period I corresponding to Part One of the book, Period II being the so-called "Critical Years" and immediately subsequent items, Period III being the so-called "Mature Style," and Period IV the "Beyond Fortuna" section. I have also folded in the other attributed masses to where Wegman discusses them. Note that Wegman differentiates 4 "layers" within the Mature Style, so that the ordering within Period III remains partly chronological/developmental.

Original releases, or more accurately first known releases, are numbered in the discography. Reissues, perhaps extracts or compilations or otherwise duplicated recordings, are not numbered. Re-releases of the exact same program are generally listed within the same files, not listed separately. The last section is for misattributed or unknown items.
